Book Buzz: Driving on the Left and Author Interview with Gail Olmsted

Today I'm interviewing author Gail Ward Olmsted. We're talking about her new release, Driving on the Left.

Driving on the Left, by Gail Ward Olmsted

Like Mother, Like Daughter?

A summer fling changed the entire course of Jackie Sullivan’s life. Back then, she trusted her instincts and took a chance on love. Now she’s at a crossroads and has a big decision to make. How much is she willing to sacrifice for the man she loves?

Her daughter Becca’s got her own problem- a secret that could threaten her carefully planned-out future. Romance is the last thing on her mind this summer.

Jackie and Becca planned to explore the beautiful Irish countryside during a relaxing vacation, but when Becca falls for tour guide Sean, she wants to explore much more. Will Becca resist temptation or follow in her mother’s footsteps? Sean may be just too good to pass up.

This book is for anyone who believes in the power of love and its ability to make you all sorts of crazy. Written as a sequel to JEEP TOUR, it can be enjoyed as a standalone read as well.

Author Q&A

1) DRIVING ON THE LEFT is the sequel to JEEP TOUR. How did you come up with your ideas for it?

My daughter and I were on vacation in Ireland in May of 2014. JEEP TOUR, my first novel, had just been published. We took a guided tour and the subject of my writing came up. Our incredibly handsome and charming tour guide Sean jokingly suggested that I write a sequel based in Ireland. We laughed about it, but I started realizing how fun it would be. I was halfway through writing Guessing at Normal, my second novel, but I kept scribbling notes for an Irish Jeep Tour. Sean read a review of Driving online and messaged me last week. I sure hope he likes what I did with his namesake!!

2) What was your favorite scene to write?

Sean (tour guide) and Becca (American tourist) have been flirting all week, but ever the professional, Sean has been keeping his distance. One night in a pub after an evening of drinking and dancing, Sean and Becca end up slow dancing and the attraction between them becomes very apparent. I love sexual tension and complications, so that was very enjoyable for me!

3) Describe DRIVING ON THE LEFT in five words.

Wow- this one’s tough. Let’s go with: Romantic, Light-hearted, Passionate, Charming, Irish

4) What types of books do you enjoy reading?

I absolutely love to read and as far as what I enjoy, I’m all over the place. My go-to is contemporary romance and chick lit, but I enjoy a good mystery and some historical fiction as well. My favorite authors are Dennis Lehane, Claire Cook and Stephen King.

5) How else do you like spending your free time?

My hub and I just downsized and bought a house on a lake. it’s more of a commute during the school year (I’m a college professor by day) but it’s so worth it!! I enjoy kayaking, tubing, sailing and cruising the lake. I also plan to get my butt up on a waterski this summer as I used to be pretty good!!

6) What new projects are you working on?

I am 15k words into my 4th manuscript. I’m working on a sequel to Guessing at Normal, working title is Second Guessing. Jill is now a single mom and successful songwriter with a new, younger love interest. I felt like she had more of a story to tell and I love being back in her head. Or is she in mine? I am also scribbling notes for, what will be for me, a real departure into biographical fiction set in the late 1800’s.
